Need For Rural Water Supply & Sanitation Sector Development

Approximately 70% of the population of Sri Lanka lives in rural areas and the majority has no access to safe drinking water.  This creates serious health problems and as a result the quality of life of rural people is affected.  This is due to low priority given to the rural water supply and sanitation sector and the inability and unwillingness of rural communities to organise themselves to develop water supply and sanitation facilities.

In order to address these issues the Government of Sri Lanka has initiated a Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank in the districts of Anuradhapura, Kegalle, Puttalam, kalutara, Monaragala and Hambantota.

OBJECTIVES

  • To improve health and well being of approximately a million people living in the selected districts through improvement of their water supply and sanitation facilities

The project covers a period of six years from 2000 to 2005 and implementation will be carried out in three batches of selected Pradeshiys Sabha Divisions
