Energy Efficiency Improvement Activities
Western south carried out many projects to improve energy efficiency activates. Through those kinds of projects, they can achieve substantial progress and activities upgraded to a higher level qualitatively and quantitatively. Saving energy through energy efficiency improvement projects can cost less. And also it helps to achieve sustainability goals including multiple economic and environmental benefits. Energy savings can reduce operating costs for local governments, freeing up resources for additional investments in energy efficiency and other priorities. Energy efficiency can also help reduce air pollution and GHG emissions, improve energy security and independence, and create jobs.
1.Replaced Pumps at Maggona
Under the energy efficiency improvement program at the NWSDB, M&E Division carried out the energy audit with the assistance of the Western south O&M team to identify the operating parameters and efficiency of the Maggona pumps. Two Numbers pumps (1 duty & 1 Standby) are used to pump the water (15hrs/day) to the water tower (for Approx. 4000 connections) using VFD in the control panel. As a result of energy audit, we could calculate the efficiency of the pumps and SEC values. The efficiencies of the pumps were around 59% and SECs were between 0.17-0.18kwh/m3. These pumps were replaced by new pumps which efficiency is above 70% on 2015. The current SEC is around 0.9 kwh/m3.The above energy project maximum payback period is 4 years and 6 months and the investment cost is 12.5 Million.
2.Replaced Pumps at Beruwela
The energy improvement project was carried out under the guidance of Energy improvement program for Beruwela Pump House. Through Energy audit, we found the efficiency of the pumps are around 60% and SECs were between 0.09-0.1 kwh/m3. The new pumps with high efficiency were replaced. Then, the efficiency of the pumps can be increased above 75% at the end of 2017. The investment cost of this project is 20 Million and maximum payback period is 4 year and 4 month.
3. Pilot project of 30kw solar powered net metering system in western South RSC office
NWSDB annually spends Rs. 3.3 billion for its electricity mainly for central air condition and building facilities. NWSDB is the largest customer for Ceylon Electricity Board. As one of the steps of energy efficiency program, solar energy project was carried out in the Regional Support Centre (Western South).Regional Support Centre (Western South) is located at Angulana station road in Moratuwa near to the Head office of NWS&DB. It is four stories building including Auditorium in fourth floor and total floor area is 2120 m2 with two separate car parks roof area are 220 m2 and 98 m2. About 90 of employees work in the office building. Average power consumption per month is 11,000 kWh. To reduce the Power Consumption of the RSC (Western-South) the proposed capacity of the solar project is 30 kW. By that, the average unit of 3600 kW per month added to national grid. Through this project, the saving energy cost per month is around 75,000.00 LKR. The investment project cost is 4.35 Million. The maximum payback period is 4 year and 5 months.
4. Solar Power Projects
There are few solar projects in western south RSC.
a) 20kw solar powered net metering system at Bandaragama Area Regional Manager Office.
Area Engineer Office (Bandaragama) is located at Janadipathi Mawatha in Bandaragama. It is three stories building with roof area is 270 m2 and total floor area is 603 m2. About 75 no of employees work in the office building. Average power consumption per month is 1,400 kWh. The capacity of 20kw of solar project was carried out under the energy efficiency program. Through this project, the unit of 2200 kwh per month can be added to the national grid. The investment cost is 2.5 Million and payback period is 4 year and 4 months. The monthly saving is around Rs.48,000.00.
b)30 kw solar powered net metering system at Dehiwela Regional Manager Office.
Regional Manager Office (Dehiwala) is located at Atapattu Place in Dehiwala near to the Dehiwala Zoo. It is three stories building including conference hall in third floor and total floor area is 824 m2 with one separate car park roof area is 115 m2. About 63 no of employees work in the office building. Average power consumption per month is 5,900 kWh. The energy efficiency program proposed to install solar project with the capacity of 30kw. The investment of this project is Rs. 4 million. Through this solar project, the unit of 3000 kWh is added to national grid per month. The energy saving cost is around Rs. 65,000.00 and also the maximum payback period is 5 year.
c)20 kw solar powered net metering system at Kaluthara Regional Manager Office.
Regional Manager Office (Kalutara) is located at No.15, Cooray Road, in Kalutara., near to the Kalutara Town. It is two stories building with roof area is 230 m2 and total floor area is 460 m2. About 60 no of employees work in the office building. Average power consumption per month is 4,750 kWh. Under the guidance of energy efficiency program, the solar project with the capacity of 20kw was installed. By that, the unit of 2200 kwh per month is added to national grid. Due to this energy saving, the energy saving cost is around Rs. 48,000.00. The investment cost for this project is Rs. 3 million. The maximum payback period is 5 year and 2 months.
d) 30 kw solar powered net metering system at Panadura Regional Manager Office.
Regional Manager Office (P/H) is located at 44, Divisional Office, Weeraman Road in Panadura near to the Panadura Town. It is three stories building with roof area is 270 m2 and total floor area is 603 m2. About 50 no of employees work in the office building. Average power consumption per month is 3,900 kWh.The capacity of 30kw of solar project was carried out under the energy efficiency program. Through this project, the unit of 3600 kWh per month can be added to the national grid. The investment cost is 4.5 Million and payback period is 4 year and 8 months. The monthly saving is around Rs.78, 000.00.
5. Pumps Automation at Moratuwa High lift pump house
The water pumped using three pumps from Moratuwa reservoir into Kadolana Tower. Due to these pumps, the energy is high for the pumps. The energy efficiency program proposed the pump arrangement. In which water is distributed through tower during off-peak time. And also water is directly distributed from Moratuwa reservoir to people during peak time without flowing through tower. At this time, the required powers for the pumps are less due to less head.
