As The National Water Supply & Drainage Board, as a state institution, provides a benefit of 200 million to the General Treasury.

As pointed out by the General Treasury at the annual performance review meeting of the National Water Supply & Drainage Board, the Board has earned a net profit in the year 2023.

If any state enterprise earns any net profit while maintaining a service by performing that service optimally, a portion of it should be given to the General Treasury as a state investment return. However, the National Water Supply & Drainage Board has not provided such a state investment return to the government in the past fifty years of its history. Although the Board has received net profit in the past, it has not been able to do so due to various practical problems. However, it has been possible to provide a state investment return from the net profit earned in the year 2023 due to the water tariff formula introduced by the government. Accordingly, it has been possible to maintain the water bill systematically by providing water without incurring losses.

The National Water Supply & Drainage Board, fulfilling its national responsibility of providing clean drinking water to the people and intervening in state investment, can be described as a remarkable progress made as a state institution at this moment when it is completing fifty years. Here is how the amount of Rs. 200 million was given to the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury, Mr. Dilip Silva, by the Chairman of the National Water Supply & Drainage Board, Eng. Deepthi U. Sumanasekara, on 27.05.2025 at the State Treasury premises. On this occasion, the General Manager of the Board, Eng. T. Mr. Barathithasan, Additional General Manager (Finance) Mr. Sarath Weerasena and Assistant General Manager Anura Kumarasena also participated.
