Directly benefiting over 500,000 people, the inauguration of a massive 28.6-kilometer water transmission pipeline system from Meegoda to Maharagama by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB)—along with the commencement of a new package water treatment plant at the Kadana Water Treatment Plant premises—took place today (July 28, 2026). The event was held under the patronage of the Honorable Minister of Housing Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe.
Replacing the old N33 pipeline system established as far back as 1958, this project will utilize modern 1000mm Ductile Iron (DI) pipes. Designed to accommodate a total flow capacity of 105,000 cubic meters of water per day, it is also set to add an additional 15,000 cubic meters of water daily from the Labugama Water Treatment Plant.
Over 135,000 water connections across numerous areas—including Homagama, Pannipitiya, Pelanwatta, Galagedara, Maharagama, and Piliyandala—are slated to receive direct benefits from this initiative.
Concurrently, as another urgent special project, the existing mechanical and electrical systems at the Kadana Water Treatment Plant are being modernized to enhance production capacity. Through these improvements, an additional clean drinking water capacity of 6,000 cubic meters per day will be added to the Kadana Water Treatment Plant within the next six months, supplementing its current daily production.
Furthermore, the installation of the new package water treatment plant at the Kadana premises, initiated with the Minister’s participation, will further boost water production capacity. This will build a strong foundation to meet the growing demand for drinking water in the future. Ultimately, these projects will make a vital contribution to sustainably fulfilling the water needs of a growing population, as well as the commercial and industrial sectors.
